Any surgical procedure has a risk for complications, which can lead to an Iatrogenic injury– an injury during surgery. The accepted incidence of neurological deficit is 11% to 15% for procedures in, and around, structures of the nervous system. IONM is benificial to the hospital and surgeon because it provides them with full documentation of a partients neurophysiological status during a surgical procedure.
When using United Medical Monitoring, everyone can feel confident that every precaution has been taken to ensure a successful outcome and avoid unintentional damage, which may be undetectable until the patient wakes up.
Documentation of the efficacy of IONM is clear. Nuwer, MR, et. al., Journal of Electroencepholography and Clinical Neuorphysiology, 1995, 96:6-11 found in examination of 97,586 spinal compromise surgeries including scoliosis in which 53% of cases were monitored and 47% were not, there was a 50% decline in major neurologic deficits in the monitored patients group versus the non-monitored group.
